The project was a residential conversion of an 800m² building, originally a working men's club in West London, into a modern single family home.
The main task was to 'marry' the original parts of the listed building with new contemporary architectural elements to create a modern open living space for a young and growing family.
Although our 'instinctive' approach is to focus on and follow a simple contemporary design we have worked on a number of period buildings where the original setting and architectural features had be respected, retained, or enhanced throughout the design process. This modern residential conversion project is a perfect example of the task we had at hand to make these two approaches work in balance.
The original building was grade II listed which meant that a lot of its features could not be removed or altered, but the client's briefing was for a modern contemporary home, enhancing the natural light where possible.
Original staircase, windows, doors, ceiling details and exposed structural ornamented beams were retained as a backdrop to an otherwise minimalist interior of this modern residential conversion project.
